Going Green
At MortgageFlex, we recognize our responsibility towards our environment. The generation of electricity is the number one contributor to greenhouse gases and computing resources are doubling their consumption of electricity every five years. In 2008, as MortgageFlex looked towards its future, it was clear that a green initiative had to be part of our corporate strategy.
Our first step towards reducing our carbon footprint was to lower our inventory of physical servers through the use of virtualization technologies. These technologies allow data center planners to take one physical server and create multiple virtual servers on the one physical system. The growth of server processor speeds and capacity of outpaced the demands of the operating systems. This “over-capacity” of computing power is what makes virtualization technology possible. The implementation of these technologies allowed MortgageFlex to reduce its server footprint by 200% along with the corresponding power demands.
Our commitment to our green initiative does not stop at simply reducing our count of servers. Since the inception of this strategy, we reevaluated our needs for physical office space and have reduced our requirements by leveraging co-location facilities for our data centers and more efficient office floor plans for our employees. Office facilities now include LED lighting, zero VOC paint and water-based chillers for climate control. The implementation of paperless document solutions has also allowed MortgageFlex to reduce the ozone emissions of printers as well as the usage of paper products.
At MortgageFlex we believe that as corporate citizens we all have a responsibility to consider the green impact of all our initiatives and we will continue to search for new ideas and methods that make this a reality.
